I just discovered a new card game called
Tremp, and I'm itching to play it.
To get an idea for the game, think Spades. The cards are dealt out in the same way and teams must bid for the number of tricks they'll take. But now it get's interesting. Bidding begins to the left of the dealer and works by placing a single card face up, to nominate the suit of that card as trump. The card says face up until it's played during the hand. Each new card increases the bid by 1 trick, and bidding begins at -4 to ensure every shows at least one card. The score for the hand is 2 to the <bid> power. For example, a bid of 5 wins 32 points and a bid of 6 wins 64.
There's another interesting quirk to the game: there are always
at least 14 cards the will beat the current high card. This works via two mechanisms:
1) Ace is low (so 2,3,4... all beat it), Ace still beats king.
2) While trump beats normal suits, there is also a
Tremp suit (the suit of the same color as trump). Any tremp card beats any trump card. But any of the non-Tremp/Trump always beats any Tremp.
Confused yet? Just wait until you play the game.
